Bird Count

This is a bird count from February 20th but I figured I'd put it on here just to make it easier.

I saw 7 starlings sitting on a wire over on 13th street while staring out of a dorm window. Also, there were about 5 sparrows I noticed while walking to Anderson and Gladfelter. Outside of 711 I saw 3 pidgeons. Sorry my sightings aren't too exciting haha.

I just looked out my window today (May 9th) and saw a Turkey Vulture, maybe? But here's a picture! It's kinda hard to see but it's on top of the pole on the left side.

Philly Urban Creators

                                                             (Sorry Kate, I'm stealing this.)

Philly Urban Creators are magicians when it comes to lot renovation. 3 years ago of you Google satellite the location where the PUC is currently working, you would see a dump. Today, it is a flourishing garden with sustainable technologies, edible foods, and educational purpose. While working with PUC for a few days, I learned about composting and gardening a bit more in depth. We planted wheat grass and sunflower seeds for an aesthetic appeal to the garden. PUC is a truly great program, Alex has a great thing going and I am excited to stay involved with this program!

Tree House Books

Philadelphia alone has about 40,000 vacant lots within its borders; 74% of which are privately owned. These private owners are responsible for maintaining their lots; however, that is not always the case. I recently worked with Tree House Books, located on 15th and Susquehanna, to begin to take over the privately owned lot located next to their store.

Tree House Books is a non-profit children’s bookstore that also runs as an after school educational program and garden. The vacant lot outside of their store was piled high with trash and weeds that the owners come by once a year to “maintain.” We worked diligently for a few hours trying to weed out the invasive species and level off the ground. Once that was finished, we placed kid-friendly flowerbeds filled with fresh, healthy soil for the kids to later plant flower seeds in.
